Psychic Mind:
Psychic Mind is a Canadian/American rock band based out of San Francisco, California. Their sound has been described as being an eclectic blend of 60’s-70’s era psyche, drawing on influences from bands such as Cream, The Byrds and Yes as well as lesser known prog pioneers Hansson & Karlsson and krautrock legends Can. The band consists primarily of the 3 founding members, Matt Stein (lead vocals, guitar), Nick Stein (drums, guitar, keyboards, flute, backing vocals), and Ron Doré (bass, backing vocals), with the recent addition of a rotating cast of live drummers.
Ron moved to San Francisco from Southern California seven years ago to find like-minded musicians to play with. He met Nick in 2013 through their respective day jobs. Nick, having recently graduated from university, had been looking to put together a psyche rock project, and after a successful jam session in the spring of 2014 they decided to to start a band. Nick convinced his brother Matt, who was living in Cincinnati Ohio, performing as Sky Ship at the time, to come on board, and he moved to San Francisco that summer.
All tracking and production are done in-house at the group’s rehearsal space in San Francisco. Both Matt and Nick have a background in audio production, and longstanding interests in vintage recording equipment and instruments, which contributes directly to the aesthetic of the finished material. After performing throughout the Bay Area as a trio, the band has recently reconfigured its live presence, with Nick playing guitar, keyboards and flute instead of drums, which had previously been his primary live instrument.
The band has self-released 2 full-length albums: Penrose Stare in January of 2015 and Past Travelers in June of 2016. The single “Coastal Highway” was released in December of 2015. A new EP is in the works for fall of 2016, as well as an accompanying west coast tour.
